International Projects Group

Since the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was proposed in 2013, King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) has provided comprehensive legal services for clients in a large number of BRI projects, including investment, financing and dispute resolution. We have set foot in the vast majority of the BRI countries and regions, following the footprints of our clients. Our services span such industries as energy, minerals, transportation, information and other core infrastructure sectors, as well as key industries for BRI construction, such as finance, manufacturing and services.

As a China-based legal service provider with an international vision and extensive global experience, KWM has long been dedicated to facilitating the global expansion of Chinese enterprises. Over the past three decades, KWM has been steadfastly moving forward with its original aspiration in mind. We have established a unique advantage in our global network layout, one-stop service capabilities, and professional team development, winning wide recognition from clients.

In the spring of 2024, as KWM embarked on another 30-year journey, we established the International Projects Group. This fully integrates the firm’s professional capabilities in international projects development and construction, international investment and financing, cross-border M&A, international arbitration, and dispute resolution. The new group will focus on the firm’s business in the key regions of BRI international cooperation, aiming to deliver more comprehensive, precise, and high-quality integrated cross-border legal services for Chinese enterprises venturing abroad and better serve the joint BRI construction.

The International Projects Group has expertise spanning the entire spectrum of cross-border transactions, covering project demonstration, transaction structuring, drafting and negotiation of transaction documents, financing assistance, operation compliance, capital operations, and dispute resolution. Moreover, our multilingual capabilities in English, Russian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, coupled with rich experience in cross-border projects, enable us to deliver effective solutions tailored toclients’ needs. Our global network, complemented by 14 International Cloud Offices (ICOs) in countries including Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Thailand, and Bangladesh, empowers us to provide clients with full-spectrum and “one-stop” professional legal services.

In addition, the group has integrated the KWM Belt & Road Centre for International Cooperation and Facilitation (BRCICF), established in 2019, which serves as a platform for integrating legal services, think tank studies, advisory services, and international cooperation. Collaborating closely with four KWM offices in Haikou, Sanya, the Lin-gang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, and Changchun, all strategically positioned to serve the national strategies of the Hainan Free Trade Port, the Yangtze River Delta Integration, and the Revitalization of Northeast China, the group is poised to support Chinese enterprises in their global pursuits.
